Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield was forced to evacuate his Florida home alongside his wife and children after their area was “pummeled” by Hurricane Helene.
Helene is now considered the strongest hurricane to ever hit the Big Bend region and has since traveled to South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia – killing 59 people according to CNN. The storm has led to mass floods and major wind damage, forcing tens of thousands of families to evacuate the area.
The Mayfield family is one of those affected but Baker’s wife, Emily, confirmed that everyone in their household made it out of the region safely. “I do not have words to accurately describe my heartbreak for everyone affected by Hurricane Helene,” Emily Mayfield wrote in an Instagram story.
“You see this stuff on TV but until you live through it, you can’t fully grasp the terror associated with the unknowns. Baker, Koko, Fergus, and I evacuated yesterday and are safe.
“Our sweet, sweet community got pummeled, but even that doesn’t compare to the people up North who took this storm head-on. It’s unfathomable. I’m so thankful to God for protecting us – and our home – and I’m praying nonstop for everyone dealing with the aftermath of the storm, the surge, the damage, the loss.
“Time to come together and help each other out. I have faith in this community,” she concluded. The Mayfields moved to Florida in 2023 after the quarterback signed a one-year deal with the Buccaneers, and have since extended their stay after he agreed to a three-year, $100 million extension in March.
Mayfield has been one of the standout quarterbacks in the NFL so far this season, although the Buccaneers are now 2-1 after suffering a heavy 26-7 defeat to the Denver Broncos in Week 3. Mayfield has thrown for 637 yards and six touchdowns this season, also throwing two interceptions.

The Buccaneers host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, but neither team of the NFL has suggested that the game will be postponed, moved, or rescheduled. According to forecasters, Hurricane Helene will be hundreds of miles away from Raymond James Stadium when both teams arrive.
It’s expected that thousands of fans will be impacted though, with airports in both Florida and Philadelphia warning passengers that most flights will be delayed, and some canceled. Amtrak train lines will also terminate in Jacksonville, and not continue to Miami as normal.
The Buccaneers were beaten 25-11 by the Eagles in their regular-season clash last year, but Tampa Bay eliminated Philadelphia in the first round of the playoffs with a shock 32-9 win. The Buccaneers have won four of the last five games against the Eagles, although two of those were with seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.
