DeWayne McCulla was arrested after choking and trying to kill his wife 47 stricken with terminal breast cancer and was only stopped when family members threw him off of her
A Utah man has been arrested after he allegedly choked his cancerstricken wife in front of six family members and only stopped when he was thrown off of her DeWayne McCulla was charged with attempted murder a felony on Wednesday after admitting to the crime
According to the victims son Ryder the incident occurred on December 20 2021 when he McCulla and five other family members assembled in Arenda McCullas hospital room to say their goodbyes Andrea had been diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma breast cancer in 2020 Ryder told NBC affiliate KSLTV that even though she had been receiving treatment his mothers cancer had severely limited his mothers quality of life
Prior to her death the family started a GoFundMe where Ryder stated that the cancer had spread to her brain neck lungs and liver and is now terminal The cancer in her neck has caused her to be disabled without full use of her right hand and arm to complete daily tasks causing lower quality of life and terrible physical pain Andrea died on December 21 2021
According to court documents McCulla claimed that he had choked the victim in an attempt to kill her to ease her suffering while they were with her during her terminal cancer and being on hospice An officer with the La Verkin police department later called McCulla to his version of what happened

During the conversation with DeWayne he admitted to placing his hand over the victim Arendas neck in an attempt to ease her suffering as she was dying from cancer and was on hospice the charges state He said this was all stopped by family members who observed what he was doing and pulled him off of her

According to the officer the man stated that he would repeat the offense because he loved his wife Ryder scoffed at McCullas proclamation saying McCullas claim that his actions were in benevolence of my mother is ludicrous adding that his mother didnt get to die with dignity
Ryder stated that McCulla prevented Andreas final wish to travel to Oregon and use the states Death with Dignity Act which allows terminally ill patients to end their lives with selfadministered lethal medications According to Ryder there was a lot of yelling between McCulla and Ryders grandmother Ryder told the outlet that he found the whole argument suspicious because McCulla allegedly offered other ways to fulfill the request
