In 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed after a live round went off on the set of the film, Rust. Three years later, the film will finally premiere
Even after the court cases and controversy, it looks like Rust will be heading to the big screen after all.
The film hit the headlines in October 2021 when a prop gun held by Alec Baldwin discharged live bullets and fatally struck cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Film director Joel Souza was also injured.
Alec was charged with involuntary manslaughter, but earlier this year in July, a judge dismissed the case against him. However, the film’s armorer Hannah Guttierez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March and is currently serving an 18 month prison sentence.
After the incident, the project was finished and finally has a premiere date three years after the fatal incident. It was announced on Thursday that Rust will have its world premiere at the Camerimage International Film Festival in Toruń, Poland. The festival will take place between November 16 and November 23 this year.

Organizers of the Camerimage International Film Festival said that Halyna will be honored during a panel discussion after the film premieres. The panel will be made up of director Joel Souza, cinematographer Bianca Cline, and Halyna’s mentor at the American Film Institute, Stephen Lighthill.
The film festival stated the panel “will discuss events surrounding the film, offering insight into continuing production after Halyna’s death” and “the unique visual style that Halyna developed on set and explain how Bianca Cline, who took over her work, managed to remarkably replicate Halyna’s style.” Director of the festival, Marek Zydowicz, also released a statement.
“We knew that our event was important to her and that she felt at home among cinematographers from all over the world, who have been gathering at Camerimage for over 30 years,” he said. “During the festival, we honored Halyna’s memory with a moment of silence and a panel of cinematographers discussed safety on set. Now, once again, together with cinematographers and film enthusiasts, we will have this special opportunity to remember her.”
After Alec was dismissed of all charges, he took to Instagram to share a message for those who supported him. “There are too many people who have supported me to thank just now,” he wrote. “To all of you, you will never know how much I appreciate your kindness toward my family.”
