Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine, who was expected to be group’s next leader, was killed in Israeli airstrike.
Safieddine, a cleric, was expected to succeed Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike last month. Israeli strikes have Hezbollah leaders in recent weeks. Israel also killed the leader of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, during a battle in Gaza last week.
Hezbollah said Safieddine was killed in an Israeli airstrike one day after Israel said he was killed in southern Beirut. He died in a strike that also killed 25 other Hezbollah members, according to Israel, in an airstrike in southern Lebanon in early October.
Israel is continuing its bombardment of Lebanon and jets struck buildings in the southern coastal city of Tyre on Wednesday. The buildings struck on Wednesday were between several heritage sites, including the hippodrome and a cluster of seaside sites associated with the ancient Phoenicians and the Crusaders.
The 2,500-year-old city, approximately 50 miles south of Beirut, is known for its Roman ruins and hippodrome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are no reports of casualties in Tyre. Israeli military issued evacuation warnings prior to the strikes.
More than 2,500 people have been killed in Lebanon since the conflict began late last year, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. Over a million people have fled their homes since September.
