Two people are dead and a third injured after a house in an Ohio village exploded and caught on fire Tuesday morning, according to local fire officials.
The explosion occurred at around 8:44 a.m. on Vic Joy Drive in the Village of Bethel, a town of around 2,600 just southeast of Cincinnati, Bethel Fire Chief Christopher Cooper said at a news conference.
It was a large explosion that had sent debris across the neighborhood, Cooper said. The fire chief described the scene as “chaotic.”
The shockwave from the explosion reportedly reverberated around the neighborhood one homeowner told NBC affiliate WLWT of Cincinnati who described it as feeling like a “shockwave” going throughout his house.

Derrick Gullett lives next door to the house told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he was woken up by the explosion and that the shockwave physically pushed him out of bed.
“It sounded like someone was trying to come through my house,” Gullett told the outlet. He added that the man who owned the house was a Vietnam War veteran and mostly kept to himself.
“He was always the first one to give you a wave,” Gullett said.
Cooper told WLWT that the two victims who died in the explosion were a man and woman who are not being identified at this time. The third injured male according to witnesses was a heating repair worker who was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center to be treated for burn injuries.
When firefighters arrived at the scene the house was engulfed in flames, WCPO Channel 9 reports. The couple who lived in the house reportedly owned several cats, at least two of which survived the explosion, WCPO reported.
You could feel it, it was louder than any boom Ive ever heard. This was undeniably loud,” another neighbor, Stephanie Young, told the outlet. Young added that when she opened the door she saw debris everywhere.
The house that exploded was a one-story ranch house that used propane instead of gas, Cooper said.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation and the Ohio State Fire Marshal will be leading the investigation, according to Cooper. He added that it is unclear how long the investigation would take.
