The 98th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade was full of cheer – but with some issues.
Over 5 million viewers tuned into NBC and Peacock, with a special Spanish broadcast on Telemundo to watch the Macy’s parade. Plus, an astonishing 3.5million turned out in New York City to experience the event in person. Today’s Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Al Roker hosted the event.
The annual event featured performances from Jennifer Hudson, Billy Porter, and Kylie Minogue, while other celebrities like Jimmy Fallon, Ariana Madix and T-Pain riding down the avenues on festive floats. YouTube sensation Charli D’Amelio made her highly-anticipated appearance, and for sports enthusiasts, the New York Liberty brought along their mascot, Ellie the Elephant.

Things started to take a turn when viewers noticed Al sitting a little lower alongside Savannah and Hoda. One person on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: “If anyone is hiring please let me know. i was the person at nbc who made sure al roker had a normal-sized chair.” Another person wrote: “Why are they doing Al Roker dirty like this and making him look like hes 3 feet tall?” A third person wrote: “Why they got my mans looking like this Someone get Al Roker an encyclopedia to sit on our something my gosh.” A fourth wrote: “Al Roker sits at the kids table.”
It looked like Al got the memo because right after, he was then seen at the same level as his co-hosts. The NBC show also caused a stir when the music failed to start, just before vocal duo The War and Treaty were about to perform.
The hosts introduced the performance to viewers at home but no music started to play. The War and Treaty were seen smiling at the rainy parade, but no sound came out of their microphones. The network took a quick commercial break and the musical duo performed.
Viewers at home quickly noticed and shared their thoughts. One person wrote: “I absolutely love War and Treaty, but did we really need to have a 5 minute commercial break for this to hold up the parade? Give the extra time to a live performing dance or band group!” Another person wrote: “Bummed The War and Treaty couldnt perform due to technical difficulties at #MacysThanksgivingDayParade.”
