Tragic new details have emerged revealing Liam Payne previously attempted to escape a hotel room before his tragic death last month.
The former One Direction star died aged 31 after he fell from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He had been staying at the Casa Sur Palmero Hotel at the time, with his body being discovered in the hotel’s internal courtyard.
After his death, police found substances and damaged furniture in his hotel room. According to witness statements, some believed the hotel staff were aware of Liam’s threats to jump from the balcony but left him unattended.

The singer reportedly suffered from a repeated aversion to being confined in hotel rooms a fear dating back to his time in One Direction. This aversion prompted another balcony escape attempt only a month before he died, where it’s alleged he tried fleeing a Florida rental property using a garden hose to shimmy down a balcony, after security shut him in over suspected drug use concerns.
Three years before his death, Liam candidly spoke about how touring in his teens had “really f—– him up.” During a 2021 appearance on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Liam shared, “My dad said it from day one – lonely hotel rooms, man – getting locked in that room is not fun when you’ve been exposed.”
On the day he died, witnesses have claimed Liam had informed hotel staff he didn’t want to be confined in his room, warning he might use the balcony to flee. Ignoring his concerns, staff reportedly secured him in his room using a master key.
Just minutes later, an employee called 911 and said, “I don’t know whether his life may be in danger. He is in a room with a balcony, and, well, we’re a little afraid.” Liam’s attempt to leave via the balcony ended in heartbreak, with his body discovered alongside a bag, which had been absent when he initially entered his room.
A second floor hotel guest discovered a leather bag containing pills, a bottle of Jack Daniels, and a note labelled for Liam on their balcony following the singer’s death. Investigators believe the bag was lowered to the second-floor balcony as part of his escape attempt.
