U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. on Wednesday called on the embattled leader to step down for the good of the city as his administration continues to be the target of multiple federal investigations.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. called on the embattled leader to step down for the good of the city as his administration continues to be the target of multiple federal investigations. “I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “The flood of resignations and vacancies are threatening gov function. Nonstop investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration. For the good of the city, he should resign.”
Ocasio-Cortez is the first high-profile Democrat to call for Adams’s resignation. The FBI is currently conducting four different investigations into Adams and city officials including possible corruption and bribery and quid pro quo dealings with Turkey.

Earlier this week, New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks submitted his resignation after federal agents seized his phone earlier this month, The Associated Press reported. Before that, New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban resigned amid a federal investigation where his home was raided.
Federal prosecutors are currently investigating whether Adams conspired with the Turkish government to funnel illegal foreign donations to his campaign had also sought information about interactions with five other countries, the New York Times reported on Monday.
Adams shot back at the congresswoman, pointing out that despite the inquiries into him and several of his associates, he has not been charged. “For anyone who self-righteously claims people charged with serious crimes should not be in jail to now say that the second Black mayor of New York should resign because of rumors and innuendo — without even a single charge being filed — is the height of hypocrisy,” Adams told The Hill in an emailed statement.
“I am leading this city to protect it from exactly that kind of phony politics. The people of this city elected me to fight for them, and I will stay and fight no matter what,” he added.
Adams has at least one defender in Representative Hakeem Jeffries, a New Yorker who leads House Democrats.
He said Adams was “working as hard as he can to be the best mayor possible,” and added: “We need Eric Adams to be successful as mayor because he is the mayor at this moment in time.
