A normal school day turned into a nightmare for a five-year-old boy after he fell asleep on the school bus and woke up locked in outside the home of the driver hours later.
The grandma of Kansas kindergartener Lane Meitl is demanding answers after the debacle on the way to school. The driver, who has since lost her job, had parked the vehicle outside his own house unaware the boy was still on her bus.
Lane woke up hours later to find himself locked in the bus in the tiny city of Hoxie, home to about 1,000 people.
His incredulous grandmother Leta Meitl said to KWCH: “How could that happen? You count three getting off the bus. You count three getting on the bus. It’s not rocket science.”

The Hoxie School District has revealed the bus driver is no longer employed with the district since the October 28 incident.
“We learned that a student had been left on a school bus for a portion of the school day. Thankfully, the student was not harmed, and we are continuing to support the family,” the district said in a statement.
Despite assurances the boy was unharmed, his grandma is horrified about what he went through. She said: “I cried. I just kept wondering what was going on in his little mind.”
Thankfully the weather in Kansas at this time of year isn’t too cold or too hot so the little boy wasn’t in danger but if a mistake this was made in the depths of winter, the story couldn’t have been far more sinister.
Leta has said she hopes proper checks are carried out in future to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen again.
“It takes less than 10 seconds to walk to the back and back to the front of the bus,” she said.
Lane’s mom has thanked the district for their response to the whole thing.
“Hoxie has been very kind to us about this and continuing to support us. We do love Hoxie and are very grateful for the school district,” she wrote online.
This comes after an Albuquerque, New Mexico, public school bus attendant was arrested after she was caught on camera repeatedly striking a student with autism.
According to an incident report, Debbie Chavira, 64, is accused of hitting the youngster numerous times. According to the police, between August 26 and September 4, Chavira hit the student 59 times in the face, arms, and torso. According to the incident report, the boy arrived “with fresh scratch marks on the back of his neck,” prompting school authorities to report her on September 4.
Officials examined more surveillance tape while looking into the alleged abuse, and they claim that Chavira was observed punching the youngster repeatedly over a 10-day period.
