Caleb Williams has revealed that he did not know that the Chicago Bears would be firing Matt Eberlus, while giving his reaction to the news for first time.
The former Bears head coach was fired after their Thanksgiving Day game debacle, in which Eberflus strangely chose not to call a timeout, nor get a quick play in to get into field goal range with just 36 seconds left on the clock.
The consensus had been that Eberflus should have called a timeout, giving his kicker a chance to tie up the game. But instead, Eberflus opted to have Williams throw the ball giving his quarterback little chance to complete a hail mary with time running out. After the game, Eberflus defended his decision to not call a timeout, before being fired less than 24 hours later.
Over the past decade or so, it has become known that front offices have spoken to certain players in organizations, such as the quarterbacks, before making a decision on a head coaches future. But Williams has stated that he was not approached before making his feeling known on Eberflus.
Speaking on Eberflus firing, Williams said: Its interesting I didnt, I dont get any say or choice over that. I have to, you know, roll with the punches. Its interesting, its tough Hes the reason why Im here. He drafted me. So going through that and that process is interesting for me.
Thats a man that has a family. A man that ended up getting fired. Theres a human part of it, a human part to it, and theres a business part to it that you have to understand and, like I said, roll with the punches from there.
Despite Williams having the opportunity to call a timeout, with some even suggesting that blame should be placed on him for their loss to the Lions, many had agreed that the head coach did put the rookie quarterback in a rough situation.
Earlier this year, the Bears fired Williams playcaller and offensive coordinator in Shane Waldron, in what has been a tough first year for the quarterback despite having an impressive group of wide receivers around him.
