The parents of an Indiana toddler are accused of leaving the girl in a closet with a space heater at temperatures of up to 109 degrees Fahrenheit until she died.
Sintia Perez, 21, and Jace Hirschy, 23, were arrested on Nov. 27 and charged with a count each of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, which is a level one felony in the state of Indiana, as well as two counts each of neglect of a dependent, a level six felony.
The couple, from Berne, is alleged to have left their young daughter in the closet with a space heater, which heated the room to between 85 and 109 degrees Fahrenheit, leading to the two-year-old girl’s death from hyperthermia, an autopsy later confirmed.

The girl’s body temperature was 109.4 degrees when the authorities measured it at the scene, it was revealed in court documents obtained by WANE.
The Berne Police Department reportedly responded to Swiss Meadows Apartments just before 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 27 after receiving calls about a death investigation.
Arriving officers found Perez and Hirschy along with their other two children, aged five and three, in the home, which police said was littered with trash, making it difficult to navigate.

Cockroaches were discovered in the residence as well, it was reported, and there was a pot on the stove that contained mold and several flies. One of the officers ventured into the bedroom and found a closet where the 2-year-old slept, court documents said.
That officer reportedly immediately noticed a drastic temperature change between that bedroom and the closet. Upon entering it, the officer reportedly found the two-year-old on a soiled mattress. She was dressed in a diaper, and her body was discolored. There were also reportedly feces found in the corner of the room.
Perez told the cops that she had put the two-year-old to bed at approximately 7 p.m. the previous night and turned on a space heater before nearly closing the door all the way. She woke up at 12:30 p.m. the next day, and it was reported that neither parent checked on the child until after 3 p.m.

When they did, they found her dead. The other two children were taken into custody by the Department of Child Services, and both were reportedly found to have lice on their heads.
Perez and Hirschy both are being held in the Adams County Jail and are due back in court for a pretrial conference on Feb. 14, with their jury trial planned for March 7, 2025.
