During an LAPD Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, newly inaugurated LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell gave an update on the case of Hannah Kobayashi, who vanished over two weeks ago after missing her connecting flight at LAX.
McDonnell said the family is continuing their own personal search for their loved one, along with LAPD detectives reviewing surveillance footage from areas where Hannah was last seen and using various investigating techniques to locate Hannah. McDonnell said that detectives were able to conclude through their investigation that Hannah had missed her connecting flight on purpose.
“On Friday, Nov. 8 23-year-old Hannah Kobayashi missed her connecting flight from LAX to New York which the investigation determined was intentional,” McDonnell said. “Over the next few days, he maintained contact with her family and remained active on Instagram.”

McDonnell added that her family had traveled to Los Angeles on Nov. 13 after losing contact with Hannah and filed a missing persons report. The last major update in the case came on Sunday when Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi was found dead in a parking lot in Downtown Los Angeles after falling from a parking structure, according to police. Ryan’s cause of death was later determined by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner to be suicide.
“Our hearts go out to the Kobayashi family during this unimaginable time of grief. We remain fully committed to locating Hannah and supporting the family as they navigate their way through this tragedy,” McDonell said.
Recently, Hannah’s sister Sydni Kobayashi said in an interview with News Nation’s Chris Cuomo on Wednesday that text messages family members received from Hannah’s phone were absolutely not like her.
One message received by a friend of Hannah from her read tricked pretty much into giving away all my funds to someone I thought I loved.”
Deep Hackers wiped my identity, stole all of my funds, & have had me on a mind f*** since Friday, another message said.
This is absolutely not like her, especially with the text messages that she last sent, she told the broadcaster. In my mind, it feels like someone was controlling her. Or it might not have even been her,” Sydni told Cuomo. This whole situation is bizarre. She would never have done anything like this to our family.
Sydni said of her father Ryan, 58, that he fought until his last breath to find Hannah.
He deprived himself of sleep, he wasnt eating, Sydni said while holding back tears. And he pushed and he pushed and he fought for her like any loving parent would.
After missing her connecting flight on Nov. 8, Hannah was spotted at The Grove a popular bookstore at an outdoor mall in LA. The next day she was seen at a Lebron James event in Downtown LA and then at a metro stop in the same area the next day. Her family last heard from her on Nov. 11
