A Mississippi brother and sister are behind bars for an attempted hit on their stepfather.
Joshua Bryan, 29, and his sister, Regan Bryan, 30, sought to hire a hitman to kill their stepdad in order to obtain life insurance proceeds, the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Southern District of Mississippi said in a news release Tuesday.
Regan Bryan, who pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit murder for hire, was sentenced to five years and five months in prison. Joshua Bryan was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder for hire and murder for hire following a trial that ended last December.

In November 2020 Regan testified that she and her brother discussed killing their stepfather and that her brother encouraged her to ask one of her criminal friends if they knew anybody that would handle the problem, according to an order denying Joshua Bryans motion seeking an acquittal.
During on phone call made on Dec. 8, 2020, Regan told her brother that a recently released felon was coming over and Joshua told her three times in that call to make a proposal, court documents said. After Regan made the “proposal” the felon informed the FBI and began recording his conversations with the siblings, according to court documents.
On Dec. 10 the informant asked Joshua for the go-ahead, and Joshua told him to do what he saw fit, the documents said. The informant then recorded a conversation with the siblings about alibis and how they would pay the hitman.
On Dec. 30, in a meeting recorded on video, Joshua wrote something on a piece of paper, showed it to the informant, then walked outside and burned it. According to the informant, the message said, Tell your boy to come on. Ill make sure he gets paid handsomely.
On Jan. 7, Regan met with the informant and the supposed hitman, writing notes with instructions on the hit and destroying them afterward. Later that day a recorded phone call on Regans cellphone captured a call between the siblings.
This is fing over with, Joshua said in that call. Hopefully everything works out real fing soon.
Regan then told her brother about her visit with the informant and the hitman that day. Well, I hope he has safe fing travels, Joshua responded.
