A 25-year-old woman won the lottery. Then, her boyfriend called her “greedy” for keeping the $50,000 for herself and not sharing any with him.
The anonymous woman took to a Reddit forum to ask for advice about her situation, detailing her recent good luck as she wrote, “I recently won $50,000 from a scratch-off lottery ticket.”
It was the first time she had ever won anything big, and I was over the moon,” she said. But then she detailed how her boyfriend, 27, whom she had been with for two years, started gradually “joking” about how he would use the money.

She said the two had been planning on taking major steps in their relationship soon, but they were still discussing that. They didn’t yet live together, and they had never had any “serious conversations about combining finances” whatsoever.
She said she initially laughed the jokes off, but then, they began to get more serious. “At first, it was lighthearted stuff, like, ‘We’ll buy a fancy new gaming setup or finally upgrade my car!’ But as the night went on, his jokes got a little more serious,” she wrote. “He said things like, ‘I guess I don’t have to save for that trip to Europe anymore your treat!’ and ‘Finally, you can help me pay off some of my credit card debt.'”
Then, he started mentioning things like down payments on a new house together using her winnings, which she said threw her off, since they never seriously discussed any of that.

She went on to say she told him that she planned to save most of it for herself, to either invest it or use it to pay off some of her student loans. He then got upset and said she was being selfish, she said.
“He said that couples share everything and that it was our win, not just mine, because he’s supported me through a lot,” she wrote. But she wasn’t convinced of that, and she said she turned to Reddit for a second opinion. She said she had bought the ticket with her money, had scratched it off herself and never made a single promise to him that she would share any winnings.
And yet, her boyfriend called her “greedy and distant,” she claimed, and said her actions showed that she’s “not serious about [their] relationship.”

Commenters on the post were overwhelmingly in favor of the woman, with one writing, according to PEOPLE Magazine: “You actually won twice!!! First the $50k, then an even greater value. Insight into who you are dating. Get away from him now.”
Others were quick to argue that the boyfriend seemed to be financially illiterate, stating that he seemed to be overestimating significantly how far $50,000 would go. One wrote, “A new car, a house, an international vacation, and still enough money to pay off credit card debt? I’m beginning to see why he has credit card debt. Dude is financially illiterate.”
Another summed up what most people seemed to be thinking, writing, “It’s your money, not his. Anything you give him or spend on him is a massive privilege for him and to have the audacity to try and spend it for you is a massive red flag.”
The original poster replied to that comment, writing that she was thinking about breaking up with her boyfriend. Some commenters had already suggested that she do so. She wrote, “The more I think about it, the angrier I get. He’s been manipulating me for a long time, but this will stop now!”
