A 20-year-old California is heartbroken and desperately searching for her missing dog after it went missing from a routine grooming appointment at a Lakewood Petco salon on Thursday.
Aubree Booher of Norwalk, CA told local ABC 7 Eyewitness News that groomers at the Petco reportedly mistook her dog, Betty Lou, for another customer’s dog.
“According to them what had happened was someone came to pick up their dog and their dog looked similar to mine. So they brought out my dog and when my dog saw that it wasn’t me or my mom, I guess she got scared. She backed out of their leash and was able to get past everybody and ran out of the store,” Booher told ABC 7.
‘I knew I’d give neighbor’s dog better life so I adopted it when it ran away’
Booher told the outlet that the groomers reportedly chased Betty as she ran across the street but they eventually lost sight of her. Booher and her mother said they spent all night searching for Betty but were unable to locate her.
“When you come to the realization that you’re actually going to go home without your dog, it makes it all the more real,” Aubree’s mother Cynthia Booher told ABC 7.
“She was a 16th birthday present from my grandpa and upon getting this dog, he made me promise that I would never lose this dog. I just feel like I’m failing my grandpa,” Booher said.
“We are in close contact with them and doing everything we can to help find Betty Lou, including an ongoing search, offering a reward for her safe return and retaining a professional dog tracker,” Petco said in a statement to ABC 7.
It has now been five days since Betty ran off and the company is now offering a reward of $2,000 for the lost pup’s safe return to her family.
“At this point, besides posting on social media, we’re just trying to spread the word as much as possible so we can have more eyes out for Betty,” Booher said.
Petco said that if anyone see’s Betty they advise that they do not approach her and and instead call the Lakewood Store. Anyone with information as to Betty’s whereabouts are also encouraged to call the store at 562-630-2888.
