Mariah Carey performs an iconic song from her 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi at the American Music Awards’ 50th Anniversary Special and fans were living. This comes after a month of her devastating loss of both her mom and sister
Mariah Carey celebrated her 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi at the American Music Awards’ 50th Anniversary Special.
The AMAs commemorated turning 50 in a special tonight on Sunday, October 6 on CBS. There were other performances to help the music award show ring in their 50th birthday aside from the legendary songstress. There were performances by Gladys Knight, Stray Kids, Kane Brown and so many more. Mariah performed a hit song We Belong together from her iconic multiplatinum album as it nearing its 20th anniversary.
As the singer performed the song in a gorgeous white body-hugging gown with black stripes on the side with a big sparkly pink M on the stage, fans were very excited to be taken down memory lane with the notable angsty love song.
One fan on X formerly Twitter said: “Mariah Carey KNEW the rent was due with “We Belong Together!” A second fan agreed writing: “We Belong Together” is STILL my sh–! The music industry tried to leave Mariah Carey for dead! She had something for their a–es with that one! A HIT!”
Another wrote: “Mariah Carey being that living legend performing live at the #AMAs50 UNTOUCHABLE.” A fourth fan said: “Mariah has performed ‘We Belong Together’ a gazillion times, and every time she performs it, no matter the arrangement, she’s gonna sing tf outta that climax.”
The singer is a 10-time AMA winner herself and this was her first award show performance since the tragic loss of both her mother Patricia and sister Alison on the same day. Mariah shared the devastating news to PEOPLE in late August. In her statement, she started off saying her “heart is broken” and shared that she saw her mother before she passed. She thanked everyone for their “love and support and respect” for her privacy while she dealt with the tragedy.
The 55-year did not disclosed the manner of their death. But her estranged sister death was revealed by David Baker, patient advocate and friend of Alison. He told Times Union that her death was due to her organ function and that Alison was in hospice. He refused to say the cause.
Mariah did also perform in China and Brazil in September in the midst of the tragedy which was the first performance of the singer. Before that, she returned to social media to showcase her practicing for those upcoming global concerts.
