Rita Carrey died on Thursday just ahead of her favorite holiday, according to her husband.
He wrote on her Facebook page: “It is with heavy heart and my deepest sadness, surrounded by her family and friends Rita passed away peacefully and quietly on November 14 2024. Rita and I (Alex) have been together for 16 years and we just got married last year in July in an outdoor wedding that she has always wanted. We travelled the world and met many people who we consider friends. Rita was my bestest friend, my lover and my beautiful wife. Rita always had a loving soul and wanted to help everyone even total strangers. As everyone knows Christmas was Ritas favourite holiday actually it was everyday for her and she started a fundraiser to help a local charity.”
Alex further shared that there will be a private vigil on Dec. 7, 2024 for those close to the family. Plus, “everyone is encouraged to attend the Christmas on the Terrace public event in support of Gillians Place.” He requested donations to be made in her memory such as “Non-perishable food, childrens clothing, toiletry items or unwrapped childrens presents.”
He added: “Its been a wonderful and crazy journey with Rita. She filled everyones heart with joy with every step she took and I will never forget this beautiful and amazingly talented woman. Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend. Until we meet again. You really did have the Time of your life.”
In life, Rita was a singer-songwriter, establishing The Rita Carrey Band. Plus, she was a co-host and producer on the radio show The Peet & Reet Show.
An outpouring of support came from friends and family alike. One friend, Peter Sacco, commented: “My very deepest condolences Alex, I am so saddened to hear this. We were at your wedding celebration and Rita was so happy with you, and when she sang that night everything was so perfect. Rita will be deeply missed and I am so lucky to have known her and call her friend.”
“My deepest condolences to you Alex, as well as Ritas family. Rita has always been an amazing lady with such talent and always thought of everyone around here. My heart goes out to Jim, Pat as well Ritas late brother John and their families. If there is anything you need please reach out. Again Im so sorry of your loss! Not fair,” wrote another.
Many shared fond memories of Rita with one noting, “I have met Rita on many occasions and I never left her without having a smile on my face.”
