Olivia Munn and John Mulaney were simply having a baby together.
When the news broke that Olivia was pregnant with her and the comedian’s first baby, now-2-year-old Malcolm, it was seen as the next step in their whirlwind romance. However, the Hit-Monkey actress recently reavealed that couldn’t have been further from the truth.
“It wasn’t anything close to ‘dating,’” Olivia said in an interview with GQ magazine published on Nov. 12. “I barely knew him.”
While the Newsroom alum and John, 42, met one time in 2013, they reconnected in 2021, not long after the former Saturday Night Live writer’s months-long stay in rehab for drug and alcohol addiction when he was looking for help finding a new place to live.
Still, their romance was brief—and they were living on opposite coasts (John in New York City and Olivia in Los Angeles). So, when she got pregnant, there wasn’t plans to rush into anything and they would simply co-parent.
“It wasn’t necessarily ‘We’re going to be married and live together’ or any of that,” she added, “but it was ‘I will be involved in some way.’”
The pair officially became a couple six months into her pregnancy. Olivia, who helped John work through his recovery in the early months, shared that she believes her pregnancy played a large part in helping John stay motivated and happy following the troubling period.
“That’s the one thing that made him seem light and happy,” she recalled of the moment John—who was previously married to Anna Marie Tendler—found out he would become a father. “I remember he was really excited to tell his parents.”
Olivia and John went on to welcome Malcom in December 2021. In August, the Saturday Night Live alum confirmed that he and Olivia got married during a private ceremony in July. Just two months later, the newlyweds shared that they welcomed their second child, a little girl named Méi June Mulaney, via surrogate.
“Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon,” the couple wrote in a joint Instagram Post on Sept. 22 alongside a picture of them and their baby girl. “We stole so much stuff from the hospital. I love my little girl so much. Méi (pronounced may) means plum in Chinese.”
Earlier this month, John gave the world a little insight into his life with Olivia and their two children.
“My wife and I just welcomed a baby girl into our family,” John noted in his Satuday Night Live opening monologue Nov. 2 while reflecting on how much his life has changed since his last appearance in 2022. “We have a five-week-old daughter, and a 2-year-old son. My wife takes care of the five-week-old, and I take the 2-year-old out. And that’s not fair.”
