The toxicology examination on Liam Payne’s body has not yet been completed, officials in Argentina have announced.
The former One Direction star tragically died last Wednesday at the age of 31 after falling from the third floor balcony of his hotel in Buenos Aires. Preliminary tests have been carried out, but more results are needed before his body can be released to his family.
Liam’s father Geoff Payne has traveled to Argentina to expedite the return of his son’s remains. A representative of the public prosecutor’s office met with Geoff to provide him with an update on the investigation into Liam’s death.

Andrés Esteban Madrea told Geoff that toxicology and histopathological exams still need to be completed. Once those results come through, Liam’s body can be released.
Unverified claims from the US suggest a mix of drugs, including pink cocainea designer drug with MDMA, ketamine, methamphetaminealong with crack cocaine and benzodiazepine, were detected during a partial autopsy.
However, officials have stressed this does not provide an accurate reading of how much of any of the drugs were circulating in Liam’s blood when he died. The final toxicology results are not expected to be made public for several weeks.
Following Liam’s father’s meeting with officials, a spokesperson for the public prosecution declared: “During the meeting with Mr Madrea, the musician’s father expressed his desire for an investigation and his wish to know what happened, and told the prosecutor that he was willing to testify about everything he knows about his son’s life that could help the probe.”
The investigation into Liam’s death is still underway, with forensic tests ongoing and analysis of “mobile phones, computers, photographs and CCTV footage” in progress. Officials said: “They will require a longer period of analysis.”
Last week, it was reported that prosecutors had interviewed hotel staff and two women, identified as prostitutes, who were with Liam before his death. Officials are now using “hotel workers, acquaintances, technical and medical professionals and other people linked to him through his work” to try and reconstruct Liam’s final hours.
Prosecutors have classified the death as “inconclusive”, stating there is currently no evidence of third-party involvement. They also suggested that Liam may have fallen from his balcony in a state of semi or total unconsciousness during a substance-induced psychotic episode.
The initial autopsy, conducted last Wednesday night, revealed that Liam died from multiple trauma injuries that caused internal and external bleeding, including a suspected skull fracture among his 25 life-threatening injuries.
