The American Music Award Anniversary special seemed to confuse many viewers who anticipate the awards ceremony each year.
For the last 50 years, the AMAs has honored the music stars who were at the top of their game, and impacted their respective music genre greatly. On Sunday night, the AMAs honored the awards ceremony’s 50th anniversary by paying tribute to icons from each beloved music genre who have been recognized at the AMAs, which first started in 1974. Throughout the night, the AMA’s Anniversary special took a look back at all of the famous AMAs recipients and beloved AMA performances.
To make the night more special, there were special performances by music sensations such as Mariah Carey, Nelly, and Nile Rogers.
While many enjoyed the show, there were some who didn’t understand why no awards were given out to current artists.

“Are they going to give away any awards at the american music awards, or????,” one person asked on X, formerly Twitter. A second added: “So no awards are being given out tonight at the American Music AWARDS?”
According to Rolling Stone, the AMA’s Anniversary special “served as a tribute to the past 50 years and feature dazzling new performances, heartfelt artist interviews, legendary special guests, and exclusive never-before-seen footage from DCP’s extensive archives, highlighting iconic moments that have defined the awards show and shaped pop culture.” Although the regular AMAs was supposed to air on October 6, it has been pushed back until March 2025. When the 2025 AMAs airs, it will be on CBS for the first time in the awards ceremony’s history.
The AMAs hasn’t aired since 2022. AMAs ran on ABC until its contract expired in 2022. Since then the AMAs has been on a hiatus until a new network picked it up. Sunday night’s AMAs anniversary special garnered mixed reactions from viewers, with some loving it and others admitting they weren’t even aware anything AMAs-related was happening.
“Leave it to @raye to leave us picking our jaws off of the floor. Her performance tonight was one of the most powerful and beautiful displays of vocals I have ever and WILL ever hear. AMAZING. The American Music Awards will never be the same…a performance 50 years in the making,” one wrote on X, complimenting songstress Raye who performed James Brown’s hit song It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World during the special.
Meanwhile, another noted: “The American Music Awards making absolutely no noise i just learned it was happening.”
