It’s no wonder that Yellowstone was canceled given that even their fanbase is downvoting them.
The second half of the shows fifth and final season was met with hefty criticism from fans. While previous seasons held strong on Rotten Tomatoes, Yellowstone’s rating recently tanked to their lowest level yet with only a 40% audience score. Its only redeeming quality was the 84% critic score which, while not the highest, certainly isn’t as low as Season 1’s 57% score.
While they’re not loving it, fans are still watching it. Yellowstone drew in 16.4 million viewers on cable which is record-breaking for the show. It continues to stay as one of America’s most loved shows, even if it’ll be disappearing from television screens in the not too distant future.
Noticeably, Kevin Costner was absent from the second part of the show. The news was previously made public after he decided to pursue a movie production, Horizon, instead. He wrote in an Instagram post in June: “It was something that really changed me. I loved it and I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning. I love the relationship that we’ve been able to develop, and I’ll see you at the movies.”
Kevin revealed that there was “no script” when he made it onto Yellowstone’s set for this season’s shoot, despite him giving up some time from Horizon. “I made Yellowstone the first priority, and to insinuate anything else would be wrong,” he told Deadline earlier this year. “I did not initiate any of those things. They did. They were doing a tap dance and this poor guy was also having to write so much.”
Kevin also claimed he tried to be flexible with the show’s creators, telling them he’d be willing to come to the set for a week as they figure out how to kill him off or otherwise write him out of the story. He said: “I really didnt have that week to give them, but I said, Ill do that. And then they [spun that] into, I only wanted to work a week.”
He further expressed his frustration over the lack of support from the network. He told PEOPLE: “I was disappointed that nobody on their side … ever stepped up to defend what it was I actually did for them. There came a moment where I thought, ‘Wow, when is somebody going to say something about what I have done versus what I haven’t done?'”
